This includes removal of certain advertising components, that may gather statistics as well as detection of various keylogging and other spy utilities. In addition, it also securely removes PC and Internet usage tracks, including browser history, temporary pages, cookies (with option to keep selected) and more. The program offers an attractive outlook-style interface that is easy to use and multi-lingual. In addition, a recovery feature allows you to restore your settings if needed.

PestPatrol costs $39.95 pre year including updates for a year for the home users edition and it may be worth it.
Please click here to see a comparison between PestPatrol, SpyBot-S&D and Ad-aware.

PestPatrol is a powerful security and personal privacy tool that detects and eliminates destructive pests like trojans, spyware, adware and hacker tools. It complements your anti-virus and firewall software, extending your protection against non-viral malicious software that can evade your existing security and invade your personal privacy.

These pests often lurk silently on your computer until something – or someone – sets them off. When that happens, you could lose passwords, personal data, credit card numbers, and - if you telecommute and connect to your office via a VPN - open up a back door for the hacker into your entire company network.

PestPatrol defeats the threat by detecting and removing:
Spyware and adware that "phones home" information about you, your computer, and your surfing habits
Remote access trojans (RATs) that allow an attacker to remotely control your computer
Keystroke loggers that can steal passwords and other confidential data
Denial-of-service (DoS) attack agents that can crash or hang a program, or your entire system
Probe tools that look for vulnerabilities on your system that a hacker can exploit

Go to MS Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.1

Scan for missing hotfixes and vulnerabilities
Microsoft has created a new tool, the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), to analyze Windows systems for common security misconfigurations. Version 1.0 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems.
NOTE: MBSA runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems and will scan for missing hotfixes and vulnerabilities in the following products: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000 and XP.

Go to SpySites SpySites

Stop Web Sites from installing Spyware, Sleazeware and Cookies on your PC. (Free and Plus Version available.)
SpySites includes a database of over 1,500 known Spy/Sleaze sites and guides you through the simple process of including them in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone and setting policies to prevent them from performing intrusive acts on your PC. By setting the policies for the Restricted sites zone to a very high level of security, you can be assured that any web sites added to the Restricted sites zone cannot do certain things which could compromise your privacy and security such as installing and/or running:
ActiveX controls
Java applets
CookiesDownload and installationof Desktop items
Use of email address as anonymous FTP password
Hijacking your Home page and/or Search page
Installing their "Sleazeware" without your knowledge

Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone can be extremely effective blocking these actions but Microsoft's Help file doesn't explain exactly how it works, what it does or how to use it. By using SpySites to set policies you will prevent sites from intruding on your privacy and possibly taking over your PC. Those annoying popups may still appear but their ability to set Cookies or perform other actions on your Computer will be blocked.

Go to SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
How? By setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a "Yes/No" box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine.

The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls. Make sure you run the Check For Updates feature frequently to get the latest database! (And make sure you check the new items to protect your system against them!)

As a side benefit, setting this "kill bit" will also prevent the spyware Active-X from running, in many cases, if it is already installed on your system.

Compatible with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4, 2000, XP.

Go to SpywareGuard SpywareGuard

Go to Zone Alarm Zone Alarm

ZoneAlarm's firewall protection guards the "doors" into your computer to keep you safe from "fires" out on the Internet.

Program control protects you from Trojan horses and other hacker malware by making sure only programs with your permission can access the Internet.

ZoneAlarm's alert and logging features keep you aware of what's happening on your computer without being overly intrusive.

ZoneAlarm's MailSafe™ feature protects you from new viruses, worms, and other malware distributed in e-mail attachments. It also protects you from any old, known threats.

Go to VisualZone VisualZone

VisualZone is an intrusion analyser and report utility for ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm Plus and ZoneAlarm Pro. It displays a clear overview of all intrusion attempts and allows you to analyse the information in lots of different ways. VisualZone can perform a backtrace to try to find even more information about the intruder. You can even automate the process so that a backtrace is performed automatically when new attacks are detected. VisualZone can also submit intrusion attempts to DShield for further analysis.

Whether simply trying to find out more or wanting to dig deeper inside the hackers mind, VisualZone is the right tool for the job. And it doesn't require any technical knowledge to get the job done.
And best of all, VisualZone is absolutely FREE !

Go to WinPatrol WinPatrol

When you run WinPatrol, you should notice that Scotty the Windows Watch Dog is standing on your Windows System Tray in the right lower corner of your screen. Probably next to your clock or speaker icons. He loves music.

Just double click on Scotty to see the valuable information he has found out about your computer. If you hold down the mouse right button you'll see a menu pop up with additional features. Using this menu you can select to have Scotty installed so he's always watching out for you. You can always go back at any time and change your mind and uncheck the "Always Run WinPatrol" menu option. This menu also provides a way to Exit WinPatrol anytime you want.

Windows XP users have the ability to hide inactive icons. If you use this feature Scotty may disappear because he appears to be sleeping. You should set WinPatrol to "Always Show" so the menu is always available to you. Even if you don't see Scotty he will still be on patrol based on your settings.

Every now and then a file will get by the above programs. Usually it'a a EXE file that's used as a tracking goodie within a web site. Most of the time they won't hurt a thing, but it's just one more file loaded into your computer that's taking up space.
Download Express will notify you that a file is about to be download and you'll have a choice to except the file or not.

Go to Download Express Download Express

MetaProducts Download Express (DE) is a Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP program that allows you to download individual files from the Web and FTP sites at the maximum possible speed. Multiple downloading channels technology significantly decreases the time necessary to download files. Download Express is a small (about 260 Kb) Browser plugin application. Currently it supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher. By default, Download Express intercepts all clicks on files with extentions: 123, ARJ, CAB, CDW, COM, DOC, EXE, JAR, LHA, MP2, MP3, MPE, MPEG, MPG, PDF, PPT, RAR, RTF, TAR, XLS and ZIP. Download Express has the auto-learn feature. It will ask you about including filename extentions when you add files with a new extention using browser click hot keys. When you cancel, Download Express opens a file window for unwanted file types and asks if you want to exclude this extention from its file types list.

When you block sites you'll see a lot of these:
Yahoooo! One less ad to look at!! :-)
and you will see a lot less advertisements.
Doesn't that just brake you heart?
It sure does brake my heart - NOT! :-)

Ya gotta get tough with the WWW!
