With this selection of tips for travelling to Galicia we want to help you organise your trip to one of the most beautiful autonomous communities in the country.
Although it is known worldwide for the Camino de Santiago, Galicia can also boast endless postcard landscapes, pristine beaches and towns and villages where you can get to know the local culture. In addition, of course, the people will welcome you as if you were part of the family and the gastronomy will not leave you or your stomach indifferent and will surely become another reason to want to get to know this beautiful land.
Based on the route through Galicia by car and our experience after doing the Camino de Santiago, we leave you what are for us the 10 essential tips for travelling to Galicia. Let's start!
1. What is the best time of the year?
Although it could be said that any time is good to travel to Galicia, we cannot forget that, focusing on the climatological aspect, there are some months more suitable than others to enjoy this beautiful land.
High season (July and August): these are the months that are usually the sunniest, but they are also the most popular with travellers who want to enjoy days at the beach and good weather. Keep in mind that these months are also the busiest and many of the most touristy places tend to be overcrowded.
It is also important to book accommodation and transport in advance, if needed, as high prices and low availability often go hand in hand.Mid-season (May, June and September): in our experience, these are the best months of the year to travel to Galicia as the weather is usually stable, there are plenty of daylight hours and the most touristy places are not yet receiving the summer tourism. In addition, prices tend to be relatively cheap in accommodation, even in the most touristy areas.
Low season (October to May): these are the months when the weather tends to be the most unstable, so they are also the least touristy. The price of accommodation is usually much cheaper and some services are reduced, such as the boats to the Cíes Islands.
It is very important to bear in mind that the weather in Galicia is usually quite unstable throughout the year and it is not unusual that some months of July are not extremely sunny and that the same year, the month of June has not brought a single day of rain. That is why it is difficult to determine the best time to travel to Galicia and know that you are going to get it right.
Tips for travelling to Galicia
2. How to start your trip to Galicia?
The first important thing to do when travelling to Galicia is to decide what means of transport you will use to get to and around the area. If you are going to fly to one of the main cities, we recommend you check this flight search engine, where you can find the best deals.
Once you've done that, you'll need to consider whether or not you want to hire a car. Our experience leads us to recommend the need to use this means of transport because of the freedom of timetables and movement it offers, as travelling around the region by public transport can be more complicated due to the lack of routes between many of the most touristy places to see in Galicia.
With these points solved, we recommend you to check the route to decide where you want to stay. For this we recommend you use this hotel search engine, where you can find the best options at the best prices. Remember that in high season it is highly advisable to book your accommodation in advance, as prices tend to increase and availability can be considerably reduced, especially in the more touristy areas.
Once you have your bookings sorted out, we also recommend that you check the excursions you want to do as there are some, such as the register and the boat to the Cíes Islands, which have limited availability and tend to sell out very quickly. You can check in this excursion search engine all the available options, with prices and even the option to book directly.
Don't forget that, as we have mentioned on several occasions, if you are going to travel to Galicia in high season, it is very important that you book your flights, transport, accommodation and excursions in good time, as prices tend to increase at this time of year and availability is considerably reduced.

We spent a month touring a large part of the region in this way and we can assure you that the experience was unbeatable as it allowed us to access all the places we had planned in a comfortable and quick way.
In case you don't go directly with yours, we recommend you to look at this car rental search engine where you can find the best offers at the best prices.
With them you can also take out Premium insurance, which is a kind of all-risk insurance, with which you can travel with total peace of mind, but at a much lower price than if you were to take it out with the car hire company itself.
Here are some recommendations for driving in Galicia:
In high season, during the months of July and August, some of the most tourist spots are usually overcrowded, something that also happens with the car parks. That's why it's important to arrive early, especially at the beaches, if you want to secure a parking space.
In case you don't find one, please respect the rules and above all don't damage the environment by parking in forbidden places or in places that damage the natural environment.
In most small towns and villages you will find parking areas, many of them free of charge.
In larger cities it is more difficult to find free parking in central areas, but there are always paid car parks for around 12-15 euros per day.
If you are going to visit the Cíes Islands or Ons Island from a city like Vigo or Sanxenxo, it is important to know that especially on weekends and in high season, the car parks at the pier are usually very full, so it is advisable to go with enough time to find a parking space before boarding time.
The roads are generally very good and the driving is pleasant. Remember to follow the rules to avoid any problems.
Remember that carrying a GPS will also help you to find places quickly and easily.

Gastronomy is undoubtedly another great reason to travel to Galicia as it is one of the most delicious cuisines in the country.
Although there are hundreds of recipes and products and it would be impossible to name them all, in this section we want to make special mention of some of them that we believe are the most representative and that you should not miss during the days you are visiting the autonomous community.

Empanada: dough filled with normally salty ingredients such as tuna and different vegetables.
Pulpo à Feira: this is one of the most typical Galician dishes. It is made with cooked octopus, whose tentacles are cut into slices, oil, salt and paprika are added and then served on a wooden plate.
Lacón con grelos: this dish is made by cooking pork shoulder, turnip greens, potatoes and chorizo, to which oil and paprika are added.
Pimientos de Padrón: these small green peppers are characterised by their delicious flavour and the characteristic spicy taste of some of them. Hence the saying: "Padrón peppers, some are hot and some are not".
Galician beef: one of the most delicious meats you can taste in the country.
Xoubas: this fish is the famous Galician sardines that are served in countless ways, although it is usually eaten grilled.
Seafood: this is undoubtedly one of the most consumed and delicious products, together with fish, in Galician cuisine.
Raxo: this is another of the most typical dishes, usually found in most bars and restaurants, and consists of pieces of pork loin that are usually accompanied by fried potatoes or Padrón peppers.
